The Canadian Pacific Railway did not only facilitate transport across the nation, but it is one of the main reasons that Canada is a nation today. The promise of a railway for confederation brought all of the regions together. Without it, Canada would not be the same today.

One of the main lessons that I learned was that the Canadian Pacific Railway had as much physical purpose as intangible purpose. It united the country not only by allowing people and cargo to travel across the country, but by unifying all of Canada's provinces. It solidified Canada as a whole.

The main group of people involved in the Canadian Pacific Railway's construction were the workers who laboured relentlessly to create what we now call the backbone of our nation. Their lives were drastically different than mine, so much so that it's hard to imagine what it was like for them. They were subject to harsh conditions and physically demanding tasks. Today, although these jobs still exist, the majority of the jobs involve much less manual labour.
